Eden's Garden

This is my little tater-tot, Eden, born in April 2008. And, yes. She has a bucket on her head. It's one of the many things that she finds humorous these days. Silly girl. She sings, she chatters, she loves playing peek-a-boo, she talks to her books, and she giggles at the most random of moments.

It has been an amazing adventure with her so far, and also somewhat difficult. You wouldn't know by looking at her or maybe even meeting her in person, but she is faced with several challenges. She has been diagnosed with low muscle strength and Duane Syndrome. The low muscle strength has effected her motor skills and she is a bit behind. The Duane Syndrome affects the eye muscles and causes an inability to move her eyes laterally (to the corner of the eye).  It has mainly affected her right eye.

Her young life has already seen a CT scan and an MRI, and we have met with a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric opthamologist, and an occupational therapist, to name a few.  She currently has weekly sessions with a physical therapist and water therapist. We are working very hard to get her crawling, standing and walking! She is on her way.

This blog is mainly for me to track her progress. Sometimes things can be a little discouraging and I have found it helpful to keep pictures and make notes of where she WAS and how far she has grown.

Welcome to Eden's Garden!

She's a dreamer, that one. She loves looking. She's a thinker, a watcher, a listener. She's never been one to fuss that much. Unless hunger or sleepiness are involved. In this picture, Eden was looking out at the lake, watching the boats cruising across the water and the birds flying in the sky. Listening to the wind blowing and the voices of people in the distance. Perfectly content.

She'll sit and watch you. Examine your face and stare at your mouth as you talk.

And then, for no good reason at all, she'll break into, what I like to call, "Story time with Eden." She'll sing, and mumble and flap her arms happily up and down. She'll point at things and clap her hands, all the while still chatting away. She'll shriek in delight one moment and grumble the next, as if the story hit a sad or scary part. She'll laugh at times and be serious others. One day, I will be able to understand what she's saying, but until then, I just smile and fill in the gaps with "uh-huh" and "no way!" and "really?" She just keeps right on going. And, no...it NEVER gets old.

Swing! PDF Print E-mail

Finally!!! Now that it's warm out, we can go to the park. I realized Eden is over a year old and she has never been swinging. So we went to the park, stat.

 (cell phone pics)

We started out with the binky in. Gonna take this nice and easy...niiiiiiiice and easy. And so far, no tears. Success! *On a side note...look at the size of those big toes!! Those are some loooooong toesies.

I wish I had this amazing photo of Eden laughing her head off, smiling with glee. Hooray for swings!! BUT: Of all the things happening at that very moment-soaring through the air, the wind blowing through her hair, swinging for the very first time, mom and dad being silly (making funny faces, saying her name, saying "look up here, honey!"), Eden was enamored...with the leg holes. Oh well :)
