Eden's Garden

This is my little tater-tot, Eden, born in April 2008. And, yes. She has a bucket on her head. It's one of the many things that she finds humorous these days. Silly girl. She sings, she chatters, she loves playing peek-a-boo, she talks to her books, and she giggles at the most random of moments.

It has been an amazing adventure with her so far, and also somewhat difficult. You wouldn't know by looking at her or maybe even meeting her in person, but she is faced with several challenges. She has been diagnosed with low muscle strength and Duane Syndrome. The low muscle strength has effected her motor skills and she is a bit behind. The Duane Syndrome affects the eye muscles and causes an inability to move her eyes laterally (to the corner of the eye).  It has mainly affected her right eye.

Her young life has already seen a CT scan and an MRI, and we have met with a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric opthamologist, and an occupational therapist, to name a few.  She currently has weekly sessions with a physical therapist and water therapist. We are working very hard to get her crawling, standing and walking! She is on her way.

This blog is mainly for me to track her progress. Sometimes things can be a little discouraging and I have found it helpful to keep pictures and make notes of where she WAS and how far she has grown.

Welcome to Eden's Garden!

I just wanted you to see what her hair does these days. There's no taming it. Maybe when it grows out, it will grow straight up. I'll keep you posted.

Eden is such a happy baby. I get that a lot. "You have such a happy baby!!" And she is...EXCEPT: when she's hungry (we try to avoid that) OR when she's reeeeeaaaalllly sleepy (we try to avoid that too) OR when she's sick of doing physical therapy (there's not much I can do about that one).

Now, I don't sit around and take pictures of my kid crying. Don't think of me like that. I just happened to have my camera. And she just happened to be frustrated after physical therapy. Poor girl.

She talks a lot when she's frustrated. As you can see, there are no tears. She's pretty much telling me how she didn't appreciate working out like that.

I couldn't tell you what's going on with that tongue. Maybe it makes things seem more dramatic?? "I'm so upset it makes me stick out my tongue!" Give that girl an Oscar!

I couldn't just post these SAD pictures. I tried and I couldn't do it. My heart couldn't take it. Here's the face we see most often:

There it is...

And

I love that big drooly, smiley face.

I love you boo boo moo moo loo loo doo doo-ehem...sorry, you weren't supposed to hear that.

Buckets PDF Print E-mail

Eden has these cute little buckets that she loves play with. There's the big blue one with ears (which typically ends up on her head), the orange jingly one (which she loves to shake), and the tiny yellow one (that we hide stuff in). They all have little faces on them. Very cute. They were given to her from our friend Jill.

The buckets have actually become a big part of physical therapy/play-time.  We show her and object, put it in one of the buckets, and see if she'll reach in a grab it. Sounds like an easy task, but I guess it's good for her little brain. Now you set it, now you don't. Where in the world did it go?

And, like I said, the blue bucket frequently gets used as a top hat.  It actually goes up there to help her practice reaching her hands up above her head.  Who would have thought toys could be so helpful?

The yoga ball. Friend or foe? Don't ask me, ask Eden.

The physical therapist sits Eden on the yoga ball and rolls it from side to side to make her practice her balance. It's not one of her favorite things to do. She'd rather just sit there and bounce. She's getting stronger, though.

In this picture, Eden is on her knees and trying to hold herself up on her arms. She doesn't look very excited about it, does she?

This is what normally happens, more often than not, when she's on her tummy. She tries to roll over. She's VERY good at rolling over from her tummy to her back. She's a pro. She's a tummy-time hater.

Grandma and Grandpa Bath welcomed Eden into this world with a very fitting gift. CowGIRL boots. They were way too big when she first got them...meant for her to wear when she was older. Well, she's a little older and her feet are definitely a little bigger. So, I thought I'd give it a try and see how they fit.

They're still pretty big. But, they're darn tootin' cute.

She found them quite amusing.

Who knew boots could be so hilarious?

And then, the examination began. I'm sure she was checking to make sure they were made properly...etc.

Checking to see if they are her size. Such a smart girl.

The heel seems to be attached quite well.

And, of course, the taste test. One of the most important parts of the boot examination.

Can somebody get some clothes on that kid???

Thanks.
